Producer Blackpink, who has made forays into the music business, is one of the only people who has never worked in a production office.
The 38-year-old, who was born in Mississippi, moved to Washington state with her family when she was 4.
She’s been in television production since she was 13 and has made television shows such as Blackpaw, a spinoff of the hit HBO series The Wire, and The Librarians.
Blackpinks debut season on BET shows, The Talk and The Breakfast Club, is set to air in January.
She also stars in the drama series I Am a Widow.
She has made music videos for Rihanna, Katy Perry and Alicia Keys, and she and her boyfriend, actor James Earl Jones, have had a year-long partnership.
But her career has been on hold because of a lack of funding.
“I’ve been working on TV for a decade,” she said.
“But there’s a certain amount of fear that people have about the industry.
You can’t just do anything and expect to get a paycheck.”
She says she’s always looked forward to the opportunity to work with people she’s worked with before.
“It was just so important to be able to work together and be part of a great production,” she says.
But in her experience, she says, it’s difficult to get funding for projects.
“In order to get into production, I needed to find a place that was really supportive of my dreams,” she explains.
“My dream job would be a music producer, but it’s not something that I’ve ever thought of.”
So Blackpinky, who is the first black woman to be nominated for an Emmy for a reality show, is putting her money where her mouth is by looking for ways to get involved.
The first episode of Blackpicks new season is slated to air on BET on Jan. 21.
She says the series will explore race and gender and will feature black characters.
“You’re going to see the world in a different light,” she promises.
“There’s not going to be a black person on the show.
It’s not about being black.
I think it’s going to show people that there are other things that can be made out of this.”
She hopes that viewers who want to see her work can tune in.
“When I’m watching Blackpigs first episode, it just blows my mind,” she jokes.
“The story I’m telling, it feels like I’m getting a glimpse of the future.”
Blackpickers next season will be called The Blackpongers, and it will air on Spike TV, BET and in other local and national markets in January 2019.
