Aussie producer and director Paul Young has signed on to produce and direct a TV series called Crazy Town, based on the hit American crime drama The Wire.
The series will air on FX.
Young is a writer and producer on The Wire and is also known for his work on the feature film The Last of Us.
The project is co-created by Young and writer/producer Ben Thompson, and the pair is based on a novel by author Brandon Sanderson.
The show will be produced by Young, Thompson and writer Mark Schiller, with production company WME.
Young has been a regular in the American television industry for several years, working as a writer/executive producer on shows such as The Vampire Diaries, The Vampire Hunter, Grey’s Anatomy, and Law & Order: SVU.
He is the co-founder of the production company Fidelity Media and has a production company with partner James Cagney.
His first film was The Blacklist, which he wrote and directed.
Young was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for his directing on the film The Night Manager.
His most recent film, the feature documentary, The People, is out this fall.
“The idea of doing a TV show about an American crime story is really exciting to me, and I’ve been writing scripts for a while,” Young said in a statement.
“I’ve written some scripts, but I wanted to see if I could make them into a TV project, and now that I’m doing that, I’m going to be able to really show the world what this place is really like.”
Crazy Town is a thriller in the vein of the HBO series, which starred Kevin Spacey and produced by director David Fincher.
Young, who is best known for The Wire, The Last Of Us, and American Crime Story: The People documentary series, has a history with crime fiction, having written the crime drama Blood Money and wrote and produced a number of crime movies for the studio.
He’s also worked on the crime anthology series Crime in the First, which will air later this year.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2016, he said that he was inspired by the work of writers such as Thomas Harris and David Lynch, and that his own interest in crime fiction stemmed from his own experiences growing up.
He also told the magazine that he’s always been a fan of the crime fiction of Raymond Chandler and Edgar Allan Poe, and hopes that Crazy Town will reflect those authors’ stories.
“A lot of crime fiction is based around a relationship,” Young explained.
“It’s really about the fear of being caught and that you’re afraid of being discovered.”
